Rumpelstiltskin Short Story for Kids
A long, long time ago in a faraway land, there was a poor miller who wanted to get rich, so he told the king that his daughter could spin straw into gold.
When the king heard this he gave his order to put the girl in the tower and lock her in a room filled with straw.
The miller’s girl was locked in a room in the tower. She started crying because she didn’t know how to turn all that straw into gold.
Suddenly a funny-looking old man appeared out of nowhere. “Can help you turn straw into gold, but you should give your gold necklace in exchange”, he said. She agreed to give her a gold necklace.
The next day the king came in. he was astonished. Seeing the gold the King ordered his men to give her more straw.
Again the girl started crying. The old man appeared again and offered to help her in exchange for her gold ring. She gave her gold ring to the old man.
By the morning straw had been turned to gold. Once again, the king was astonished by the miller’s daughter’s talent. The king decided to give even more straw this time and also promised to marry her and make her Queen if she spun that straw into gold.
Night came and the old man appeared again. “I have nothing to give you”, the girl said. “You promise me that you will give me your firstborn child in exchange for my help,” the old man said. The girl had no choice. “Alright, I will give you my first child”, she promised.
The next morning, when the king entered the room he was amazed, it was filled with gold again. He kept his promise. They got married and soon the queen gave birth to a child.
That night the funny old man appeared again and asked for the queen’s child. She got scared. She said, “I will give you anything gold, precious stones, land”. “I have no interest in your gold. But I will let you keep your child if you guess my name within three days”, the old man answered. The Queen agreed.
Two days passed and she kept listing names but the old man kept saying “No” to all her guesses. The queen decided to send a messenger to follow the old man.
On the way, the old man sang to himself, “Tomorrow, Tomorrow, tomorrow, I will go to the king’s house, nobody knows my name, I’m called Rumpelstiltskin…”.
The next day the funny old man returned to the palace and the queen kept listing names until she finally listed “Rumpelstiltskin”. The old man got so angry. In a flash, he stamped his foot on the ground so hard that a big hole opened and he disappeared into it forever.
