The Donkey and His Shadow Moral Story
On a hot summer day, a traveller hired a donkey to travel through a desert. The traveller rode on the donkey and started their journey towards the destination. The donkey’s master also walked behind them.
After a few hours, both the donkey and the master became tired, so they stopped on the way to take some rest.
The tired master sat under the donkey’s shadow to relax. The traveller also wanted to sit under the shade.
Therefore, the traveller said, “I have hired this donkey, so his shadow is mine. It’s my right to sit under the shadow. Get up and let me sit there”. The master replied, “You have hired the donkey, not the shadow. As his master, It’s my right to use the shadow”.
A quarrel began between the two over the donkey’s shadow, and soon, they engaged in a big fight.
The fight frightened the donkey, causing him to run away, taking the shadow with him.
Moral Of The Story:
1. The fight over a trivial matter costs the real substance.
2. Those who fight over a shadow lose the substance.
In arguing of the shadow, we forgo the substance. – John Lyly.
Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow. – AESOP.
Perseverance is the key to success. Never give up, and keep making efforts. It’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock.
